Getting To Know the Coaches: Brett

On a daily basis, the coaches get the amazing opportunity to connect with the athletes of Albany CrossFit and CrossFit Clifton Park. Not only do we get to help people realize their fitness goals, but we get to know you all on a personal level, making that growth and improvement all that more enriching. Part of building that trust is knowing who is instructing you, so we'll be introducing our coaching staff, in their own words.  First up, the man of the morning: Brett.

Brett Andrus – True Lies albany fitness

One of these things is not like the other ones! See if you can pick out which of these statements is NOT true (only one) about the “Morning Guy” who coaches Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 5:45am at Albany CrossFit. 

A. Brett is a 2nd degree black belt in Karate.

B. Brett is also a 1st degree black belt in Judo, which he earned in Japan.

C. Brett speaks fluent Japanese.

D. Brett is a Level 2 certified CrossFit Trainer.

E. Brett has been coaching since September of 2007.

F. Brett started CrossFit on his own by following CrossFit.com. He couldn’t complete the entire 10km run when it first came up. His Fran time was over 12 minutes, scaled. He lost 15 pounds when he started.

G. Brett is a certified CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting Coach, and attended EC Synkowski’s Weightlifting seminar and John North’s Attitude Nation Weightlifting Seminar.

H. Brett’s favorite lift is the snatch and he can lift more than his bodyweight (94Kg) overhead in one motion.

I. Brett once shot a basket from half-court to win the pizza give-away at Alfred University’s basketball game halftime. They wouldn’t give him the prize because he was one of the cheerleaders. He did a front handspring on his way off the court. albany coaching

J. Brett did a round off-back handspring on stage at a college dance recital.

K. Brett has two children, Kenneth and TJ.

L. Brett is a certified Starting Strength Coach, CrossFit Movement and Mobility Coach, and CrossFit Endurance Coach

M. Brett makes drugs for a living.

N. Brett has traveled as far as Texas to attend CrossFit certifications.

O. Using CrossFit, Brett has added over 100 pounds each to his deadlift and back squat, over 50 pounds to his bench press, and taken over 8 minutes off of his original (scaled) Fran time (now Rx’ed). He has added 19 strict pull-ups to his starting 8, added over 30 push-ups, and can now do handstand push-ups and muscle-ups (which he couldn’t do when starting).

P. In the ‘90s, aside from karate classes, Brett used to teach Rockin’ Kickboxin’, and a 30 minute abs class.

Q. Brett coached motorcycling for beginner riders.

R. Brett tutored Chemistry, Biology, and Calculus at HVCC while studying there.

S. Brett rode his bicycle around the island of Japan he lived on, Shikoku. It was a 6 day tour.

T. Brett worked on a dinner cruise ship in Hawaii as a translator. There were impersonators of Elvis, Madonna, Little Richard, and Mariah Carey performing nightly on board.

U. Brett can blow bubbles with beef jerky.

V. Brett is 2 time regional full-contact karate champion and qualified for the national championships of non-contact sparring in Japan.

W. Brett loves his “Morning Mayhem” members and thinks there could not be a better way to start the day.

X. Brett has eaten raw horse, chicken testicles, and raw sea urchin he had just gotten from the ocean while snorkeling.

Y. Brett once worked in an ice cream shop. They had a policy where employees got free ice cream. He gained 15 pounds while working there and the store went out of business shortly after he left.

Z. Brett DJs weddings, mitzvahs, and other parties.

Oh, and by the way, he's pretty good at Oly Lifting:
