It’s good to take pride in our badges of honor. We’re proud of chest bruises from a PR in power cleans or front squats. I’ve told people that the long cut on my shin was from a good day with deadlifts, and am not looking to display the dark and painful bruise above my hip. Some of these are more concealable than others, so, I am sharing some possible explanations to give curious non-Cross-Fitters.
Q: What is that awful bruise on your hip? A: New tatoo, and the guy’s first day. (I don’t recommend saying you walked into something. They’ll suspect domestic violence, or think you drink too much)
Q: Is that a bruise or a hickey on your chest? A: I was carrying a load of books, laundry basket, chair(Housework looks good. Don’t say hickey, especially if you’re married, or attached, and your significant other can’t claim credit).
Q: How did you cut your hands? A: I was scrubbing pots and pans, and went on to scouring sinks.(Be sure your house smells like you did this work, and if you mention bathroom cleaning it should shine like bright headlights. This might suck without rubber gloves.)
Q: What is that scrape on your shin(s)? A. I cut myself shaving(works well for women; men may have difficulty. Do not implicate deadlifts, or box jumps, for it can lead to haters.)
Q: What are those cuts on your wrists? (If people think you’re a cutter, they may just ask if everything’s ok, and just look at your wrists. This one’s tricky.) A. It’s friction from rubber gloves; I’ve been doing a lot of housework. (I don’t think anyone would get the muscle-up explanation. I just wore long sleeves in public. Sucks in the summer)
I hope this is helpful. Please add your own with comments. There is always an opportunity for complete honesty and education, but, one word of warning: Haters gonna hate.
