Ouch – written by Leb(atomoy)

Everybody hurting a little after this week? I know I am. “Barbara” alone left many of our athletes sore for days. Still, many people toughed it out and came in despite the aches to do battle with the ensuing WOD’s. You might be asking “Caleb, aren’t you being a bit hypocritical praising such actions after making a big fuss a couple weeks ago about overtraining and not letting your body rest?” If in fact there were individuals who were not actively allotting adequate days for rest then, yes perhaps my lauding said efforts is somewhat contradictory. But, in this case, there have been tremendous improvements in appropriate training amongst those at potential risk of overtraining, so no such issue was present. This does lead me to my topic for this piece, the issue of working through pain.

Many of us former or current competitive athletes (though I’d say we’re all current athletes as CrossFitters) have faced injury at sometime or other. What did your first ask as they stood over you trying to assess the severity of your ailment. Especially if you were involved in the rough and tumble world of contact sport, where the macho-man mentality reigns supreme, you probably heard something along the lines of “So are you hurt or are you injured?” If you didn’t catch the reference, this is a quote from The Program when James Caan addresses Omar Epps during football practice. What I am trying to get at is, we need you to be able to distinguish the difference between the general soreness that comes with the training we prescribe, versus actually incurring significant structural damage (i.e. broken bones, sprains, strains, etc.). One of these things (actually both but that’s for later) can be managed and overcome, albeit with a little will power in concert with appropriate recovery tactics. Often, by simply coming in on those tired and creaky days when your body just does not seem to want to cooperate, and going through an active rest day (mobility, stretching, foam rolling with perhaps a lower intensity workout for example) will leave you feeling much better and more restored than if you stayed home and did no physical activity at all. That’s not to say don’t take full rest days ever, just consider something like a lower intensity WOD instead of avoiding coming in a third day in a row.

Also, as it turns out, you can actually continue to train when you are injured. Not only that, it’s encouraged. Let me say it again in for emphasis, you CAN and SHOULD CrossFit with an injury. Revolutionary… I know. Sarcasm aside, it is true that by continuing training whilst injured is not only not bad for you, it will aide in your recovery. Don’t believe me? Watch this video with Kelly Starrett (http://journal.crossfit.com/2009/06/why-crossfit-with-acute-injuries-part-1.tpl#_login) who is a Doctor of Physical Therapy as well as the owner of San Fransisco CrossFit. In the clip he discusses benefits to continue CrossFit, though modified, when recovering from acute injuries, such as a “cross-over” effect (a phenomenon where as training a unimpaired left leg will also cause the right leg to get stronger as well) and preventing subsequent ailments that result from allowing other parts of the body to become de-conditioned during recovery. It’s only about 7 and a half minutes, well worth the time to watch it. Basically, if your foot is broken or shoulder is dislocated, we can find a way to work around that and modify the movements so that the rest of your body does not have to reap the consequences of prolonged inactivity.

In the end, I again urge you as I did in my previous blurbs to be smart about your training body and make intelligent choices when it comes to pushing the intensity or backing off and letting an active recovery allow for more healing to take place. There is a time for both so just make sure to listen to your body and react accordingly.
