CrossFit Chronicles of the Skinny Girl: Part I

Do you find that society has associated the term “skinny” with “healthy”? Or, even worse, “physically fit”? I have, and it has to be my BIGGEST pet peeve.

When I started CrossFit, I believed that I was already in fabulous shape and in perfect health. I have always been thin (genetics) and had the ability to eat whatever I wanted, anytime, anywhere. Life seemed pretty grand. “Shut up, shut up, shut up!” you’re probably thinking, “Good for freakin’ YOU!” Yes, we would all love the luxury of surviving a Wendy’s baconator, large fry and frosty on a weekly basis. But, this was probably the worst quality I had encompassed pre-CrossFit (i.e., believing that, since I was skinny, I could eat crap 24/7 and STILL be healthy). Not good.

So, when, and how, did things change?

Unfortunately, it wasn’t until the CrossFit Nutrition Certification that I realized how internally damaging my diet was. This was certainly the stimulus to a life-changing chain of events. First, the bread and pasta was gone. For YEARS I had eaten pasta at least 3 times a week– my heart and soul was literally made of elbow macaroni and red sauce. Then, the cheese was gone (still heartbreaking… and, Caleb is French… I’m still not sure how we did it). Then, there was the Whole 30 Challenge, where I actually started reading, in full detail, the ingredients on labels. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and gluten to the max— its no wonder we all have diabetes, upset stomachs and inflammatory troubles. This stuff is poison! (I could go on and on AND ON about HFCS… ahem…)!

So, not only did nutrition become sexy and important to the supposedly “fit” skinny girl, but, so did becoming strong and physically functional…

Tim gets mid-evil on the bar Murph splits his Jerk

We are all used to the coaches checking us out.  Now, we're getting checked in.  Everyone is issued a key-tag that you swipe on an electronic reader when you come in.  This is to replace the kind but frantic trips from the laptop to the whiteboard for writing class attendance.  This also eliminates arguments between coaches over handwriting, size of font, and efficient use of space on the board.  While it's freaking funny to watch, I have to wonder how much these guys can take.  One coach criticizes anothers handwriting, and the other responds "apologizing" for not having a "girls" handwriting. Hysterical to watch this banter, but, a distraction from the more important activities like checking out the athletes – for their soreness status and stuff – nothing creepy (yeah right)!

This card is very high tech.  If you leave the building, will the system let you back in?  Is this like a bus pass, or dining hall meal card?  Do we get Crossfit Care coupons printed out for us at the end of the month like CVS?  Does our time expire, and our pass key buzz to tell us to leave.  If so, they must have created that part for me.

This is a good thing.  We can track classes efficiently (a concept that makes some very efficient coaches happy).  Does Marley get one, and have to check herself in and out whenever she goes outside like a puppy pay toilet?

Will we be paying for our water bottles on line through this card?  We still have to do stuff in advance.  The night before, we sign up for classes the way we have been doing, and then check in the following day for classes.  It's a great system, if we all use it properly.  No duplicating each others pass keys.  Please be careful if you wear it on a string or chain around your neck.  You'd hate to get it caught on a pull-up bar.

This is only ACF's first generation of this system.  Soon, we will have DNA identification via our sweat.  The pass key may also be used to track how much chalk each of us is using.  Keep watching for future developments.

Tequila and Salt

This should probably be taped to your bathroom mirror where one could read it every day…You may not realize it, but it's 100% true.

1. There are at least two people in this world that you would die for.

2. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.

3. The only reason anyone would ever hate you is because they want to be just like you.

4. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.

5. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.

6. You mean the world to someone.

7. You are special and unique.

8. Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.

9. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good comes from it.

10. When you think the world has turned its back on you take another look.

11. Always remember the compliments you received.  Forget about the rude remarks.

So……….. always remember…when life hands you Lemons, ask for Tequila and Salt and call me over!

I will have an album up soon, once I go through all the pictures! If anyone else took photos, please send them our way and we’ll put them in the album!

  5. It smacks of totalitarianism in the school system; the student is a commodity and the teacher is the factory line-worker producing shiny widgets. Lucy and Ethel on the chocolate conveyor belt were more successful in their production than a teacher could be based on very flawed set of criteria.

  6. I love the mix of darker colors with lighter and softer ones. Cindy has made a beautiful layered journaling tag, and I love those cute blue birds.
